Based on a true story, the The Scarlet Professor imagines the inner life of Newton Arvin, a scholar of American literature at Smith College who was fired from his job in 1960 after being arrested for receiving so-called "beefcake" magazines in the U.S. mail. The story was brought to life by Barry Werth in his 2001 of the same name.
With a beautiful and inventive score based incorporating American idoms by composer Eric Sawyer, and a deft lyrics by librettist Harley Erdman, the world premier production is being directed by Ron Bashford, with musical direction helmed by conductor Eduardo Leandro.
